On this day, JULY 4th,  in 1826, exactly 50 years after the Declaration of Independence, former Presidents Thomas Jefferson and John Adams, who were once fellow Patriots and then adversaries, both died, within five hours of each other, each thinking that the other still lived. Adams’ last words were said to be: “Jefferson lives.”Jefferson and Adams were the last surviving members of the original American revolutionaries.
